Nowhere in the Bible is there a verse that says anything about God helping those who help themselves. The Bible is full of teaching that is completely opposite to human wisdom, and this is one of those examples.

In our world, there are a lot of examples of successful people who make their own breaks. Most of the time there is nothing wrong with trying to get ahead in life by networking, using your contacts, or maneuvering your way into a system. But the wisdom we find in Proverbs says,

“You can make many plans, but the LORD’s purpose will prevail.” Proverbs 19:21 (NLT)

The reflection question to ask yourself is this:

Are you more interested in the path you can create for yourself, or the path that God has for you?

If we want God’s plan for our lives, the first thing we should do is pause…and start with a reflective prayer that focuses on trusting that as God leads and provides for us, the great purposes He has for our lives will be fulfilled.
