Focusing On What Matters

According to online search rankings, the most popular verse in the Bible is John 3:16 which states:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

This well-known verse summarizes the Gospel. It’s a message of hope for everyone, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status or ethnicity. It’s a powerful reminder of how much God wants to connect with each of us on a personal level. It’s the “Great Commission” that Jesus commanded His followers to share with all nations (Matthew 28:19).

Why is it, that so many Christians have difficulty sharing this Good News with non-believers? Could it be, that it has something to do with how Christians are perceived?

When asked “what do people think Christians are like?” the overwhelming responses to our social media post were negative. Christians are perceived to be:

  • Judgmental

  • Fanatics

  • Self-righteous

  • Hypocritical

  • Bigots

  • Close-minded

  • Annoyingly persistent

  • Delusional

  • Stupid

  • Holier than thou

  • Entitled

Basically, those who claim to believe in Jesus as their Saviour are largely viewed as anything but what Christians should be! How can we change the mindset and point people towards Christ?

The most important way you can be a good witness is by the way you live. Therefore, examine your life, since the way you act matters!

In addition, just as God desires a relationship with you, it’s important to listen instead of debate. Seek to build a relationship first, before trying to convince someone that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

Finally, remember to focus on what matters most by showing them God’s love, not by judging their lifestyle.
