A Passion For Renewal
When is the last time you felt so passionate about something you longed for?
The narrative in Ezra 1-3 paints a vivid picture of Israel’s fervent passion for the restoration of the temple, and a revival of their worship practises.
The call to return to Jerusalem, following the prophetic words of Jeremiah, is initiated by God's divine prompting—a stirring in the heart of King Cyrus, to allow the Jewish people to return from exile to their homeland.
In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his kingdom. Ezra 1:1-2 (NLT).
Upon returning to Jerusalem, the Israelites’ focus shifts to the physical restoration of the temple. The meticulous effort in rebuilding the temple reflects not just a structural renewal – it marks a spiritual renewal, as the temple once again becomes a center for worship.
When the builders completed the foundation of the Lord’s Temple, the priests put on their robes and took their places to blow their trumpets. And the Levites, descendants of Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the Lord, just as King David had prescribed. Ezra 3:10-11 (NLT)
The song of praise underscores the people's acknowledgment of God's enduring love.
With praise and thanks, they sang this song to the Lord: 'He is so good! His faithful love for Israel endures forever!' Ezra 3:11 (NLT)
The mixed emotions of the Israelites reflect the tension between the memories of the past and the hope for a renewed future.
But many of the older priests, Levites, and other leaders who had seen the first Temple wept aloud when they saw the new Temple’s foundation. The others, however, were shouting for joy. Ezra 3:12 (NLT)
This narrative serves as an inspiration for contemporary believers, urging us to embody a similar passion for renewal in our individual and communal journeys of faith, acknowledging both the challenges and the possibilities of spiritual growth.
