Creation Vs. Evolution
Science provides me with answers to questions that have been asked in many faith traditions. Science also has many unanswered questions and leaves space for religious enquiry.
The creation versus evolution debate has been ongoing since Charles Darwin published his theory on the origin of species in 1859. Personally, I have no problem in maintaining my faith while accepting science. Science and faith does not need to be contradictory.
The seed of the battle on creation comes from how we interpret the six days of creation. How do you view the creation story in the book of Genesis? How old do you think the earth is? Do you believe dinosaurs existed?
My two favorite verses about God creating the earth are not found in the book of Genesis; they are from the book of Proverbs.
“By wisdom the LORD founded the earth; by understanding he created the heavens. By his knowledge the deep fountains of the earth burst forth, and the dew settles beneath the night sky.” Proverbs 3:19-20 NLT
“The LORD formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else. I was appointed in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began. I was born before the oceans were created, before the springs bubbled forth their waters. Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born— before he had made the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil. I was there when he established the heavens, when he drew the horizon on the oceans. I was there when he set the clouds above, when he established springs deep in the earth. I was there when he set the limits of the seas, so they would not spread beyond their boundaries. And when he marked off the earth’s foundations, I was the architect at his side. I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence. And how happy I was with the world he created; how I rejoiced with the human family! Proverbs 8:22-31 NLT
Here are three things to consider while reading the Bible:
1. Creation reveals the existence of God. God is the architect. He created us because He loves us.
2. Creation reveals the character of God. God is the artist of creation. He created things with beauty and purpose.
3. God reveals the passion of God. God’s creation is His masterpiece. We are his magnum opus.
If you were created with intention and purpose, have you taken time to understand your Creator and why He made you the way you are?
