Prophet or Mystic?

If you’ve spent any amount of time studying human history, culture, and religions, you are certain to encounter both prophets and mystics. What is the difference and why should this matter to you? In our current message series, we are walking through the pages of the Bible and stopping at various Points of Interest, seeking to understand them from God’s perspective. This week, we meet the prophets and their prophetic messages.

We all have our own impressions of what might best describe a prophet. In the Old Testament God used the thundering voice of Elijah, the tender tears of Jeremiah, and the heartrending plea of Isaiah. In the New Testament, it’s the lone voice a wilderness sojourner heralding the arrival of the Messiah and the voices of the Spirit-filled followers of Jesus that speak as prophets to the nations.

Why, in God’s story, does He employ the use of prophets, who sometimes speak, what we perceive to be, incomprehensible messages in His dealings with humanity?
