Living With Purpose

Colossians 3:18-25 provides practical guidance for relationships within the Christian community, emphasizing the importance of mutual submission, integrity, and diligence in fulfilling one's roles and responsibilities. This passage sheds light on the transformative impact of the Gospel on various spheres of life, including family, work, and service.

Mutual Submission in Relationships

In Colossians 3:18-21 (NLT), Paul addresses relationships within the family unit, highlighting the principles of mutual submission.

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.

20 Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.

These instructions reflect the Biblical values of love, respect, and mutual honor within the family dynamic.

Work with Integrity and Diligence

In Colossians 3:22-25 the focus shifts to the realm of work, emphasizing the importance of integrity, diligence, and wholehearted service.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. 23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. 25 But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong you have done. For God has no favorites.

Employees are called to obey their earthly masters with sincerity and reverence for the Lord, working as though they were serving Christ Himself. Conversely, employers are reminded to treat their employees justly and fairly, recognizing that they too have a Master in heaven who will judge them impartially. This principle of integrity and fairness in the workplace reflects the Christian ethic of stewardship and service unto the Lord.

Embracing a Christ-Centered Perspective

By embracing the principles of mutual submission, love, integrity, and diligence, believers reflect the character of Christ and bear witness to His transformative power in their lives.

May we, as followers of Christ, strive to live with purpose and integrity in all our relationships and endeavours, bringing glory to God in every sphere of life.
