The Call To Holiness
Have you ever wondered what it means to be set apart for God’s purposes?
Ezra 9-10 unveils a poignant narrative that resonates with the timeless call to be set apart—a call to holiness that echoes throughout the Bible. In the face of a crisis of intermarriage with foreign nations, the Israelites confronted the imperative of maintaining their distinct identity as people of faith.
The Jewish leaders recognized that the Israelites had compromised God’s commandment (as outlined in Deuteronomy 7:3), entangling themselves in unholy alliances and practices with those in the land that was filled with corruption.
“When these things had been done, the Jewish leaders came to me and said, 'Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.'” Ezra 9:1-2 (NLT)
Ezra’s response is definitive, calling the people to repentance.
“So now confess your sin to the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do what he demands. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from these pagan women.” Ezra 10:11 (NLT)
The people recognized the gravity of their disobedience and took decisive action to rectify their sin against God. They acknowledged their deviation from God's commands and had a genuine desire to rid themselves of immorality and return to a state of holiness.
It takes courage to examine our lives and confront our compromises. However, by responding with the same resolute commitment to obedience, we will fulfill God’s purposes in our lives.
