Freedom in Christ

In 1 Corinthians 1-2, the Apostle Paul reveals how living according to worldly wisdom contrasts sharply with the divine wisdom and freedom that Christ offers. Paul invites believers to reject the world’s standards and embrace a lifestyle characterized by unity, wisdom, and holiness.

Paul begins by addressing divisions within the Corinthian church.

“Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” (1 Corinthians 1:10, NLT)

This unity reflects a lifestyle rooted in Christ’s teachings, moving away from worldly divisions and towards a shared purpose in Him.

The apostle Paul contrasts human wisdom with the message of the cross, stating,

“The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18, NLT)

Here, Paul points out that aligning our lives with Christ means embracing what the world deems foolish—Christ's sacrifice—because it is through this "foolishness" that we experience true wisdom and freedom, which comes from God alone:

“God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.” (1 Corinthians 1:30, NLT)

Divine wisdom leads to a life of righteousness and freedom from sin, which worldly wisdom can never provide.

Paul goes on to emphasize his commitment to this truth:

“For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2, NLT)

This single-minded focus on Christ is essential for shaping how we live, as we learn to embrace Godly wisdom instead of relying on our own understanding.
