Pastor Hana’s Reflection on 1 Corinthians 8-10
I’m going to let you in on a secret… I used to download music from YouTube using an online converter just because I didn’t want to spend my money on them.
Now, I knew that wasn’t right, but it didn’t stop me, or my friends, from doing it.
In this week’s reading, the Apostle Paul addresses a sticky situation that’s relatable to us today: what do we do when common cultural practices clash with our Christian ethics? He talks to the Corinthians about eating food that’s been offered to idols–which was a big part of their social and religious life.
Now his advice is deep, but practical. He says, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” It’s not just about knowing what’s right or wrong; it’s about choosing actions that show love and respect for others’ beliefs and struggles. He urges the Corinthians to look beyond their rights and freedoms, asking them to consider how their actions affect others, particularly new believers who might get confused, or stumble, in their faith.
Being a Christian isn’t about following a set of rules; it’s about living in a way that honours God. Paul encourages us to think about how our behaviour might be a stumbling block to others.
Reflection Question:
In your own life, where is pop culture conflicting with your Christian values? How are you navigating that situation?
How can you apply Paul’s principle of prioritizing the spiritual well-being of others over your own freedoms in your daily life?
What are some specific actions you can take to support and build up those around you in faith?
