What Freedom Looks Like

By Rick Carrol

When is the last time you did something for someone without expecting anything in return?

Selfless living is not a natural instinct for most people. We are easily disappointed when we’re not acknowledged for doing something special for someone else. This is especially true with family members, who tend to take each other for granted.

The Bible is clear on how we, as followers of Christ, should act towards everyone regardless of how they treat us. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul teaches us:

  1. To tirelessly do what is right:

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:9-10 (NLT)

  1. To patiently help each other out:

Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well. 2Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:1-2

  1. To consistently see the world how God sees it:

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Everything from before is gone away. Everything has now become new. 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

These are the practical expressions of faith that come from putting our faith in Jesus.
